Shiso Burger is a new burger place in Mitte taking the meat bun to new levels with their Asian fusion twist. The result is an innovative restaurant concept that shows some good potential to become a well-frequented snack place.
I just recently discovered Shiso Burger on my the way to my monthly dose of Cocolo Ramen, it’s located just around he corner on Auguststraße next to the bike store. After some friends told me about positive lunch experiences I made my way over there for dinner. The crew behind the place put a lot of effort behind the place, it’s a fresh and modern venue with an open kitchen and along with that they also put up a lot of tables outside which makes Shiso Burger a lovely hangout for a summer night burger. If you take a look at the outdated Google Street View it’s actually pretty amazing what they have done to the whole building, check it out at the bottom of the page.
Shiso is all about the burger and especially about serving burgers with an Asian twist. You can have a Bulgogi version a with Korean flavours, the Ebi one with Tiger Prawn, the Shiso one with tuna but then also just a simple Cheese Burger. Along with your burger you can choose between a couple of sides like fried, twisted potatoes, sweet potato fries and cole slaw. I had the Chili Lemon Burger with lime mayo, chili and coriander and the Korean Bulgogi burger with the twisted potatoes and sweet potato fries. And they were all pretty damn tasty, the burgers are quite small and served in a home-baked bun that is nice and fluffy. The meat is pretty juicy and the other ingredients fresh and crispy and adding it up this burger is very tasty. I’m not blown away, but quite intrigued, these burgers are not really comparable to other burgers due to asian twist and the small size but they are quite different from anything else in the city. And yes, they are small and if you are really hungry you might have to order two sides but at the same time they also only cost 4-5 euros which makes it totally ok. The sides are very tasty by the way, a nice update from the classic French Fries (which I find rather boring, regardless of how good they are). I especially like the twisted potatoes which were fried perfectly on a stick, crunchy and delicious.
I’m not sure what to say about the service, they were very friendly but also utterly confused, not knowing what tables actually weren’t reserved, messing up the order, serving four dishes in 10 min intervals, asking for permission to clear every single item..I could go on but I won’t because they did have good intentions, the thing that was missing was just the execution. And I think they can fix that. Otherwise I liked Shiso Burger and I really wouldn’t mind coming by for a quick burger now and then. It’s also a fantastic addition to the lunch scene of the area. Go check out Shiso Burger if you like unusual burgers and asian food, it’s worth it.
BEST DISH – Chili Lime Burger
GOOD TO KNOW – Burgers are small, order two sides. Or two burgers :).
